Last year, Ubiquiti impressed us when they released the Unifi Dream Machine. An all-in-one device with a built-in security gateway, access point, and 4 port switch. The idea was to eliminate the need for multiple unifi products for small simple networks. Both home and small business users could reap the benefits of an essential plug-and-play unit. While already impressive, in a classic Ubiquiti fashion they chose to expand upon this idea and improve it.
Unifi Dream Machine Pro
Now, shortly after the release of the original UDM, the UDM Pro is available. With slightly different yet highly important differences in capability, the UDM Pro is targeted at a medium scale business or small scale businesses with more specific needs.
- Unifi OS
- The UDM Pro runs on what is being called “Unifi OS”, a centralized management tool and controller for each separate function all via one single interface.
- Network Controller
- Protect Controller
- Access Controller
- The UDM Pro runs on what is being called “Unifi OS”, a centralized management tool and controller for each separate function all via one single interface.
This equates to simple on-site and remote management of the entire system, with options for multiple users under different role assignments.
- Protect
- Did you pick that up? The UDM Pro has built in Unifi Protect video surveillance integration, with an expandable NVR via either a 2.5 or 3.5 inch HDD. UDM Pro has taken surveillance to the next step. Have no fear that the 8-port integrated switch won’t be able to support all of your cameras either, the UDM Pro can easily be coupled by an existing Unifi PoE switch. Your expandability options with the UDM Pro are limitless. On top of that, use the Unifi Cloud Portal to check on your Protect cams whenever and wherever you want.
- Security Features & Design Changes
- On top of these other features the UDM Pro comes out of the gate with slightly more advanced security options for increased customization, including VPN capabilities and enterprise grade IPS/IDS systems. Additionally, the UDM Pro comes standard in a traditional 1U size rack mountable layout making it perfect for existing server closets and racks. The Unifi Dream Machine Pro does not have a built in access point due to the new design, but can support multiple access points via the 8-port switch or any other expandable switches integrated into it.
What’s the Takeaway?
The UniFi Dream Machine Pro is a monster of an appliance at a reasonable cost. As of today, the MSRP is $80 more than the original Dream Machine. For that price difference, it’s difficult to not justify the additional features.
